Why are people so obsessed about the way they look? Why can’t fat people just be the way they are? Are we living in such a superficial world that everybody has to look a particular way and be of a particular weight? Is ‘thin’ the only acceptable body shape?
These are the questions that arise in the minds of people who have a struggle with weight. As difficult as it may be, one needs to separate the wheat from the chaff. Doctors and nutritionists are not mere critics of peoples’ appearances. When most of them suggest - ‘ lose some weight, your problem will be solved’ , they know what they are talking about. It is not a standard answer to diseases. We can understand this better with the facts:
1. When a person puts on weight, the fat starts accumulating in the stomach region and then slowly spreads to other parts depending on the weight gain pattern.
2. All major organs are in the torso of the body. Ideally , the blood circulation should be very good in this area.
Picture this – a big box with a balloon placed in the centre. Nothing really happens to the balloon. Now take big fluffy cushions and place it on all four sides of the balloon. It gets squeezed and with the slightest touch it can burst. The same thing happens in your torso. As much as possible, avoid fat deposition in the stomach region.
3. What harm can a little weight around the stomach do? You will
- puff and pant with a little exercise or exertion - lungs in bad health
- Feel lethargic and depressed - heart not able to pump blood freely
- Get irritated and have allergies – liver is not detoxifying properly
- Kidney stones – kidneys not functioning properly
- Mood swings - Hormonal problems – adrenal glands not in good health
4. When doctors suggest that you lose some weight - they are suggesting that you have a relook into your lifestyle. Be responsible for your body, your health and your wellbeing. And please do not mix up ‘zest for life’ and ‘bad lifestyle’. Your health is a reflection of your body condition and the ‘zest for life’ is a reflection of your persona. Enjoy life, responsibly.
5. Most often than not, when we talk about a person’s wellbeing, we are talking about fitness levels. Get moving - swim, walk, run, jump, dance, play sports and let the endorphins make you feel good.
It is not always about the appearance, it is the baggage that one carries with the weight – the energy , the fitness, the attitude and the zeal. Be whatever weight that you want to be. Just keep it simple. Eat right, sleep well, stay fit and travel light.
